*REVIEW* - "Funeral" by Arcade Fire
I tried. I tried liking this album as much as the "experts" did, but to no avail. I can't believe the hype that Arcade Fire generated in 2004 and the critical acclaim "Funeral" garnered from the indie rock masses. Don't get me wrong, the album is good, perhaps even very good. It certainly has its poignant moments, but I can't for the life of me see how some could have named this album the best of 2004, let alone lift it up to the status of one of the greatest indie rock albums of all time, as at least one reviewer foolishly did.

Now, I admit that 2004 was not exactly full of stellar underground releases, but that's no excuse for overhyping this album. There were several other albums released last year that deserved just as much acclaim as "Funeral", in my opinion, yet went relatively unmentioned on critics' top 10 lists (see Matt Pond PA's "Emblems" and Blonde Redhead's "Misery is a Butterfly"). Many critics were impressed by the power of the lyrics on this album, especially when armed with the knowledge that Arcade Fire's members experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows in the months surrounding "Funeral"'s creation (including marriage and the deaths of 3 family members).

Honestly, I, too, was affected by the lyrics on some tracks, notably those on "Crown of Love", "Wake Up", and "Neighborhood #3 (Power out)". The latter particularly surprised me because, without having heard the song yet, I read the lyrics, and they conveyed powerfully the feelings of darkness, confusion, and numbness that one can be drowned in after the loss of a loved one (or love ones); however, I heard the song after reading the lyrics and its driving beat and almost playful guitar riff seemed to contradict the general tone of the words I'd just read. Somber orchestral accompaniaments in the background seemed to try to right the wrongs of the guitar and drums, giving the song an uneasiness that haunted me for the duration of the track.

Yet, the strength of a few songs could not compensate for what lacked in the others, and I felt unsatisfied once the album's last notes were played. Perhaps I was poisoned by the hype surrounding this album, as I tend to be skeptical and, at times, overly critical of albums receiving such accolades. Then again, maybe I'm right on. You can decide that for yourself, but I, for one, refuse to give this album any more than 4 stars at this point.

About my rating system:

1 star = Horrible
2 stars = Bad
3 stars = Fair
4 stars = Good
5 stars = Excellent

When are ya gonna update this damn thing!? ;-)

Everyone download this NOW
Some dude covered just about all the themes from Super Mario World and has posted them for free download. Download them now and press the "Play" button 'til your knuckles bleed.

You can thank me later.

When I get home, I'll have to check this out...sounds funny though.

~Courtney

Ok, gonna have to check it out.

OMG Miggy...that is the funniest thing i've ever heard...he has way too much time on his hands. And speaking of way too much time on your hands, how in the world did you come across that?!

Very cool design! Useful information. Go on!

I kneed sleep
Last night I wasn't feeling well and was apparently tossing and turning when I rolled over to the edge of our bed and whacked my right knee against the wooden frame of our bed. It was quite the rude awakening and I didn't sleep much after that, so I am super tired today.
*yawn*

I'm pretty tired as well. When Miguel doesn't sleep, Kristen doesn't sleep.

Damm, that musta hurt!!! Only you Miguel, only you...

*REVIEW* - "Riot On An Empty Street" by "Kings Of Convenience"
Hailing from Norway, Eirik Glambek Boe and Erlend Øye really caught me off guard with this album. I'd never heard anything about "Kings of Convenience", so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I surely didn't expect such a pleasant surprise. Their warm, harmonious voices layered over acoustic guitars and keyboard haunt this album much in the same way that Simon and Garfunkel's did on "Bookends", though Boe and Oye seem to take a more minimalistic approach in their gentle folk odes. My favorite song on this album is "Homesick", the first track. It's a song about having nowhere to belong...nowhere to call home. "So I'll lose some sales, and my boss won't be happy, but there's only one thing on my mind: searching boxes underneath the counter, on the chance that on a tape I'll find a song for someone who needs somewhere to long for." The whole album gives you that feeling of longing for somewhere or someone. The songs are of nostalgia and sometimes disappointment, but never regret. Overall, "Riot on An Empty Street" is a strong album with several gems for those who take the time to relax and enjoy a walk down memory lane. I give it 4 stars out of 5.

About my rating system:
My preferred system is more complex than this, but I've gotten some feedback from friends already and I've realized it may be overkill, so I've decided to simplify it. Here's the breakdown.

1 star = Horrible
2 stars = Bad
3 stars = Fair
4 stars = Good
5 stars = Excellent

Sabbath is here
I'm glad the Sabbath is finally here...I got plenty of rest last night and am ready for a pretty full day. Besides our usual church service this morning, our church is having an Open House this evening between 5PM and 7PM. All are invited. I believe part of the plan is to have refreshments picnic-style, so if you are averse to being outside (or have small children and don't wish to have them out for long), you may want to keep that in mind. Call me for directions or more info if you are interested in joining us.

Crown me
I'm getting my permanent crown for tooth #19 this afternoon...last time I had this done (on another tooth) it hurt a lot because they won't be using anaesthesia for it. I especially hate when the dentist pokes and scrapes around the affected area with his pointy little instruments of pain.

I'll try to get an album review or two up this weekend...

I love how you link everything. It's great.

Hey, are you making fun of me? ;)

She would never do something like that Miggy.

Damn, I don't even think I have that many teeth! ;-)

Excellent, love it!

My iTunes playlist RSS feed
I've written an application in C# that finds my current iTunes playlist and generates an RSS 2.0 feed about the albums I'm currently listening to. I have scheduled for a batch file to be executed every few minutes that runs this application and uploads the resulting RSS feed to my website. The feed can be found here. I have an ASP script that processes the RSS feed through an XSL template and the result is the "My Music Rotation" list you see on your right! The process is entirely automated now, so I'm pretty happy about that. I'll probably post the source soon, in case anyone is interested in having it.

Happy Sabbath!
Happy Sabbath, everyone! I've had a sore on my tongue for a few days and this morning it's still there. Bummer. When I talk I sound like I have some sort of speech impediment. I'm about to queue up some Third Day

Feeling better
I was sick yesterday and the day before with a sore throat and earaches. I'm feeling better today and am back at work. I'm currently listening to Belle & Sebastian's "Dear Catastrophe Waitress"...not bad.

Also, I'm trying to think of an easy way to have my "Currently in Rotation" list auto-generate based on my iTunes playlist...I'm going to have to think harder. For now I use a quick Windows app I wrote in C# that takes a list of artists/albums and generates the HTML source I currently use in my template...I then paste that into my template and republish the blog...it's a bit of a pain.

New location
I've moved the blog to http://www.smallorbit.com/blogVorbis/. I really would like to start up again (as if I'd ever really started), and I don't think there will be any particular theme or focus, though I'm sure I'll mainly comment on music I'm currently listening to.

Speaking of..."Juturna", by Circa Survive, is an album I purchased recently, and all in all, it's a strong post-hardcore effort, though I don't find that there is anything extroardinary about it. A few tracks I enjoy are "Act Appalled" and "Wish Resign". There are a few others.

Until next time...
